Frequently Asked Questions

Because this organisation is working for the benefit of all professional British tattoo artists and we need your help. There is strength in numbers and we genuinely value the input and individual talents from experienced tattoo artists. If you share our concerns and want to protect your livelihood and the tattoo profession for future generations of tattooists, join us, get your voice heard and help to make sure that British tattooing has a safe and successful future.

£50 lifetime membership seems cheap?

Yes. We are a non-profit making organisation, run by hard working volunteers. If you wish to contribute more towards running our website or contribute to our tattoo news page, printing leaflets and running our campaign, attending tattoo conventions, it is always welcome and you can donate on the Join Us page.

Why should I join the BTAF?

Does membership cover my studio or individuals?

Individuals. You can only use our logo and claim membership for tattooists who are individually members of the BTAF and this is checked.

Why do you have to have 5 years experience to join?

Because whilst there are good tattooists who have been tattooing for less time, the BTAF requires a certain level of experience in order that its members have personal knowledge of most of the issues we discuss.

What proof do you need that I’ve been registered 5+ years?

Your current and previous registration certificates will be used. If you do not have old certificates please tell us the name of the council who registered you, your full name and the studio address and we will check directly with them.

Can my membership be revoked?

Yes. You must comply with BTAF guidelines and with the law. If you are prosecuted for any tattoo related breach of the law your membership will be cancelled with no refund given. The same applies if you are told to leave the BTAF for bringing the organisation into disrepute.

Can I use the BTAF logo on my business cards, website, etc?

You can as long as you personally are a member (not your boss or studio owner). The logo must have the word “MEMBER” under it, clearly legible.

Can you recommend an artist in my area?

For advice on choosing a suitable artist please visit this page.

Do you offer apprenticeships?

No.  But some of our members might. The BTAF is a trade organisation not a studio or training service. We support the concept of apprenticeships and suggest you follow this link for more information.

Do you endorse any suppliers or equipment?
